Brenda Fried, Florida, USA
September 12, 2000 - Unidentified Shark

Brenda was attacked by an unidentified shark while surfing at Sebastian Inlet, Florida. The attack was on September 12, 2000.

Interview Date: 3-08-01
Q Where did your attack happen?
A The Sebastian Inlet, Florida.
Q What were you doing
A: Surfing.
Q What were the water conditions?
A: The waves were great that day. Kelley Slater (6 time world surfing champion) was surfing and there were photographers all around. There wasn't much visibility and there was tons of baitfish everywhere.
Q What happened the day of your attack?
A: I caught a wave to the inside and came within ten feet of the beach. I got off my board and started to head back out. I was holding my board to the side and jumping through the first few waves when I felt an intense quick pinch on my knee. It's jaws clamped down on both sides of my leg. Then it just let go.
Q What did you do next?
A: I got out of the water and saw blood dripping down my leg. I was sort of in disbelief because it had happened so fast. Kevin Welsh (professional photographer for Surfing magazine) took a picture of me as I walked up the beach and headed to the concession stand to ask for a first aid kit.
Q Did you need stitches?
A: No. I didn't even go to the hospital. I had puncture wounds from my kneecap to the inside of my leg. I just poured some peroxide on it and went home. It was swollen and painful a few hours later.
Q Have you been back in the water?
A: Yes. I took one day off and was back in the water - it hurt though. The following day I left for California to attend Yoga school for three months. All that stretching healed my knee from the inside out.
Q Do you have any animosity towards sharks?
A: Not at all. I think it was a case of mistaken identity. I was in the way of the shark feeding. I once caught a shark fishing and let it go; a shark caught me and let me go. We're even.
